Ghom-Silk Carpets |
In orient and occident silk fabrics embodied at all times the dream of elegance and beauty. To be clothed in silk meant splendour and high social stature, be it at court or in privacy. The silk road reached from China to Europe to fulfil these dreams. The Persian Safavid dynasty 450 years ago was a time of refined culture. Beautiful mosques and spacious public places adorned the cities. Manufacturing of silk was also on the rise. The most beautiful silk carpets of these period, made for the magnificent Safawid court, are now to be seen in the famous Victoria & Albert museum in London. Since about 30 to 40 years Silk carpets are again made in Iran in many varieties, among them pieces that are affordable for common citizens. In the city of Ghom 100 miles south of Teheran developed a trade centre for silk carpets. There are even Chinese and Turkish copies for sale. But a genuine silk carpet of Ghom is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and guaranteed a solitaire. From its beginning my company engaged in this very special field, inter alia in the 60s and 70s with reimports of antique silk carpets from the USA. Since the 80s we also import these goods directly from Iran. At the moment we have in our warehouse approximately 1,000 sqm Ghom Silk carpets with very beautiful patterns, among others floral, hunting, and Kap-Korani designs. |
